10 Ways To Prepare For Your Laser Resurfacing Treatment

There are many different types of great resurfacing modalities and brands, and the treatment goes by many names. Fraxel, Fractionated (DOT) CO2, Erbium (Microlaserpeel or Arctic Peel, for example), and Halo (ablative and non-ablative fractional mix), are just a few of the great technologies available to resurface and ‘anti-age’.

These fantastic treatments can be performed at many levels for varying lengths of social downtime. Depending on the type and level of your treatment, some of the below guidelines may or may not apply to you. Read on for a few things that I go by when preparing a patient (or myself) for resurfacing, but always, ALWAYS follow the specific instructions given to you by your provider.

E’s Top Ten:

Preparing For Your Laser Resurfacing Treatment

1) Use a Retin A (generic: Tretinoin) in the months beforehand. Your provider can write you a prescription or dispense this out of the office. Your provider may ask you to stop using this anywhere from two weeks to a few days before your procedure.

2) Use a topical growth factor and/or peptide blend topical product. Using highly stabilized and potent healing serums like TNS Essential Serum, TNS Recovery Complex, or Neocutis Microserum will help to get your skin in gear for the healing process. The more prepared your skin is for treatment, the quicker your recovery will be, and you’ll likely have a more predictable -and potentially better- outcome.

3) Avoid Sun Exposure, and wear a broad spectrum SPF daily.

4) Keep your provider in the know. Let your provider know if you have any auto-immune or other health issues, allergies, or upcoming vacations (i.e., upcoming sun exposure, or if you’re not going to be around for follow ups, etc). Also be sure to let them know if you get cold sores.

5) If your provider wrote you a prescription for an anti-viral, begin this before treatment as directed. (Very important) Also fill any other prescriptions with plenty of time to spare before your treatment, in case you have any issues or hold-ups at the pharmacy.

6) If applicable, prepare your vinegar soak so it’s ready when you want it. Read more about that here.

7) Pick up any necessary post-care products. Your provider will recommend or give you products to use. DO NOT add or omit any products. Resist this urge!

8) Find or buy a zippered or button up-and-down top so you can remove it easily afterward. You may also want to locate your spare, cruddier pillow cases so when you hit the hay you won’t get ointment on your good linens.

9) Make your follow-up appointments. Your provider may want to see you multiple times during the healing process. These are important check-in’s to make sure you’re healing properly and answer any questions that come up. Making them in advance ensures you get the most convenient times for you.

10) Plan fun stuff to do at home while recovering. Have you been meaning to organize your closet but never have the time? Use your social downtime (no matter how short) to accomplish something great! Or, if it’s more your style, have yourself an 80’s movie marathon. :)

I hope some of these tips help as you plan your laser procedure! Remember to always, always follow the guidelines given to you by your provider, and prepare to enjoy your firming, smoothing, pore-reducing (and fabulous) results!

Until next time, stay fabulous my friends!

3 Fast Facts: Skinmedica TNS Recovery Complex

I started 3 fast facts because I could go on forever about some of these products… which can make writing about them a little daunting.  Instead of overthinking (and therefore procrastinating), I’ll just use this category to finally touch on some of my favorite products & three reasons you might love them too!

Three Fast Facts About: SkinMedica TNS Recovery Complex

This anti-aging product moonlights as a post-procedure super hero!

This anti-aging product moonlights as a post-procedure super hero!

➢ Fact 1

Growth factors are not something that come naturally to aging skin. Thankfully, SkinMedica has provided us with the #1 growth factor on the market, NouriCel-MD, which is a naturally secreted , physiologically-balanced combo of over 110 human growth factors that are both active and stable. TNS Recovery complex is made up of 93.6% NouriCel-MD (this means it’s potent).

Growth Factors like TNS Recovery complex basically play a game of telephone with the skin to unlock it’s ability to heal and repair itself. Since age and inflammation basically wound the skin, TNS helps ‘heal’, improving skin texture, smoothing fine lines, and reducing photo damage.

➢ Fact 2

This nifty red gel is quickly absorbed by the skin. In fact, you’ve got to be pretty quick about it! This has been a patient favorite for years. I would say that there’s almost a cult-like following of TNS among many clients/patients. Many of our patients insist that it almost instantly tightens upon application and won’t go without it. Great for all skin types, use AM/PM before all of your other serums and moisturizers.

➢ Fact 3

Since procedures like chemical peels and laser treatments are also a sort of wound, TNS Recovery complex is often times appropriate to use after your peel or laser treatment to help the skin heal quickly and predictably. That’s one reason it was called Recovery Complex! (Always check with your doctors office to see what their specific post care instructions are for your procedure). We love it after HALO laser, MicrolaserPeel, pro-fractional laser, chemical peels, after the incisions seal up post-surgical procedures, and all the time!

Playing With MicroLaserPeel

Not too long ago, I had the opportunity to experiment with Sciton’s Profractional Laser Technology, Sciton’s BBL, and Sciton’s MicroLaserPeel treatment. I was pretty excited about the versatility of the MicroLaserPeel. This  resurfacing laser treatment is fully customizable, and can fall anywhere in social downtime (ie, pinkness/sensitivity afterwards) between a REALLY effective microdermabrasion and a huge, intense laser treatment.

Here’s what can be treated with MicroLaserPeel:

• Wrinkles and Skin Texture

• Scars

• Keratosis

• Sun damage (including freckles)

• Pigment irregularities

Almost any skin areas can be treated, but the most popular treatment areas are the face, neck, chest and hands.

MicroLaserPeel (also sometimes called a NanoPeel, or a Weekend Peel) is an erbium laser treatment that removes a thin layer of damaged skin to improve texture and provide a more youthful appearance. It’s pretty great because it can be administered with great precision of depth, like if you only have one afternoon for social-downtime. The procedure is performed in your physician’s office and is pretty great because it can be custom tailored to your specific skin concerns, and most importantly: How much time you have to spare for social downtime. That, and it can be combined with other laser procedures at the same visit to maximize your results.

The depth is measured in microns, so a 10 Micron laser Peel is much lighter than a 20, which would require some social downtime. Here’s how you could look at it: A series of microdermabrasions (like maybe 6 treatments) can equal one treatment of a 10 micron MicroLaserPeel.

Here’s a great video of a demonstration. You’ll see the MicroLaserPeel’s beam being scanned over a treatment area to remove the very thin layer of the skin. As the skin heals, fresh cells grow and resurface the treated area. The result is healthier-looking skin, often with reduced wrinkles and improved tone. Patients often say that it looks like their skin went from looking ‘tired’ to fab.

Here’s the same day before and after pictures of my hand after (from top to bottom) a 4 Micron Peel, an 8 Micron Peel, and a 10 Micron Peel. (translation: Super-Light to Light)

Screen Shot 2014-03-09 at 8.34.34 PMI felt totally fine (no discomfort AT ALL), and the texture on my left hand actually looked and felt smoother and healthier than the right hand, almost right away.  I was surprised how audible the laser sound was, and how comfortable it was. I really didn’t feel much at all! Can’t wait to offer this treatment to our patients, I think they’ll love it!
